If you’re looking for Arizona sports physical therapy specialists, you’ve come to the right place. It is easy to catastrophize an injury in sports and think that our competitive careers will be affected permanently, but this is often not the case. We will work with you to get you back to your athletic trainers, your team, and to come back stronger than ever!
The demands of sports differ as do the surfaces on which they are played. In full competition mode, many athletes push themselves to the brink of their physical limitations. Though many preventive measures can be taken to reduce the risk and severity of injuries, the nature of sport dictates that injuries will inevitably occur. The good news is that among those who play sports, most injuries are simple strains and sprains.
Common sports injuries include
- Ankle sprains
- Groin pulls
- Hamstring strains
- Shin splints
- Knee injuries such as ACL tears or patellofemoral syndrome
- Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow (epicondylitis)
Rehabbing sports injuries
Stage 1: Protection and offloading
You’re probably doing this already, to some extent, though it is often difficult for athletes to accept that they need to take a break. This involves taking care of the area, and some modalities that are commonly known, such as icing the affected area.
Stage 2: Protected reloading / reconditioning
This is where an Arizona sports rehabilitation physical therapist will come in handy. We will work with you to re-establish your range of motion and strength while avoiding reinjury. This can include exercise, manual therapy, stimulation, dry needling.
Stage 3: Return to sport specific training
We can work with your athletic trainers or coaches to reintroduce activity that will support your recovery, as well as prepare you to return to your chosen sport. By this time, you will have recovered from any lost motion or weakness and are ready to train conservatively.
State 4: Return to sport
This stage can lead to anxiety for many athletes, but ultimately we won’t recommend you return to sport until you are ready.
Stage 5: Injury prevention
We will work with you to maintain a healthy regimen of injury prevention exercise based on your fitness levels, chosen sport, and individual needs.
